Dutch Market & Butcher
Kitchener, Ontario
A Dutch market and butcher counter on Ottawa Street South. Imported gouda cut to order, fresh meat from the back, and shelves of the drop, chocolate and pantry staples you grew up with.
Meats, cheese, drop and Dutch goodies. There is always a smile for you.
Tineke's, in their own words
It is a small shop doing three jobs at once: a proper butcher counter at the back, a cheese case full of imported gouda, and aisle after aisle of the Dutch groceries that are hard to find anywhere else in the city. Regulars come for the deli and leave with an armful of liquorice.
The shop
Everything is cut, weighed and bagged at the counter. If you are after something specific from home and cannot see it on the shelf, ask. There is usually a case of it in the back.
Imported gouda in four ages, plus cumin-seed and a goat's cheese. Cut from the wheel to whatever size you actually want, not shrink-wrapped in advance.
Cut to orderMild through aged
Fresh-cut steaks, roasts and deli meat, alongside the homemade sausage the shop makes itself. The strip loin has its own following.
From the backFresh daily
Dark chocolate bars, chocolate letters through the autumn, Bastogne, and the tins and boxes that turn up in every Dutch cupboard at Christmas.
A full wall of drop: Van Slooten, Autodrop and Oldtimers, running from sweet through salty to the extra-strong salmiak that stops most people at one.
Sweet to double saltWall of it
Curry ketchup, chopped kale for stamppot and the imported groceries you cannot get at the big stores. Dutch gifts and delft houses along the front windows.
ImportedStraight from Holland
The cheese case
Four ages on the counter at any given time. Ask for a taste before you commit; that is what the sample plate is for.
Mild
Soft, creamy and sliceable. The one the children eat.
Medium
Firmer, nuttier, still melts. The everyday sandwich gouda.
Aged
Dry, crystalline and sharp. Eat it in slivers with mustard.
Cumin
Spiced with cumin seed through the paste. Unmistakable.
Goat's cheese, butter, rookworst and the rest of the cold case sit alongside it. Everything is weighed and wrapped while you wait.
Shop hours
Through the year
Three or four weeks a year the shelves change over completely. If you want your own initial in dark chocolate, come early. The popular letters go first and they do not come back until next autumn.
